Efforts are underway to ensure uninterrupted jet fuel supply to OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), following a fire at the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) refinery earlier this month.
The Fuels Industry Association of South Africa (FIASA) has confirmed that NATREF is actively implementing risk mitigation measures to prevent disruptions to operations at South Africa’s busiest airport.
The fire of January 4 damaged NATREF’s Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), a critical component in jet fuel production.
Repairs to the CDU are expected to be completed by February 21.

The Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) reassured stakeholders it had sufficient jet fuel reserves to sustain ORTIA operations until January 20.
In addition, the fuel industry has adopted initiatives to address the anticipated gap in supply before the refinery is fully operational. These measures include:
• Scheduled fuel deliveries: A shipment of 17 000m³ of jet fuel arrived at ORTIA on January 12.
• Pipeline injection: A planned injection of 31 000m³ of fuel from Durban. It was scheduled for January 14, with delivery to ORTIA by January 27.
• Increased rail deliveries: Fuel deliveries by rail from Durban and Matola in Mozambique are being prioritised, with additional capacity allocated to support higher volumes.
• Alternative sourcing: Efforts are underway to secure jet fuel from other airports and through direct injections into NATREF.
FIASA, NATREF, and ACSA are working closely with industry partners to address the expected jet fuel shortage between January 20 and the pipeline delivery scheduled for January 27.

A coordinated plan was set to be finalised by January 14 to ensure ORTIA continues to operate without disruptions.
In a joint statement, the organisations assured airlines, passengers, and other stakeholders that necessary steps are being taken to maintain normal airport operations.
ACSA has pledged to keep the public informed throughout this process.
