Learners hosted for educational tour at OR Tambo

SACCA recently hosted a school tour in honour of Transport Month.

In celebration of October Transport Month, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) took education to new heights by hosting an inspiring airport tour for learners from schools across the Vaal area on October 10.

Learners from Poelano Secondary, Beverly Hills Secondary, Rutasetjhaba Secondary, Tharabollo Secondary, Qedilizwe Secondary, Maxeke Secondary, and Lakeside Secondary were given a firsthand look at the world of aviation.

SACAA’s communications manager Sisa Majola shared the vision behind the initiative with the Kempton Express.

“October Transport Month, led by the Department of Transport, aims to bring practical learning to life. We want learners to see the infrastructure up close and explore the career opportunities that exist within the transport sector.”

Learners were taught about the importance of fire extinguishers and how to use them properly.

Majola emphasised that the aviation industry is playing a crucial role in shaping young minds by offering hands-on experiences at the airport, showcasing the dynamic activities that keep air travel soaring.

He highlighted the importance of this outreach.

“The future of South Africa’s aviation industry lies in the hands of these learners. We are committed to travelling across provinces to raise awareness about the exciting career paths available in aviation.”

A key goal of the tour was to dispel misconceptions.

“There’s a perception that aviation is only for certain groups, that it’s predominantly for men or just for a select few.

“Part of our responsibility is to break down those barriers and show learners the vast array of careers available in aviation,” Majola said.

Learners were fascinated about the jaws of life tool.

He stressed the importance of academic preparation, encouraging learners to pursue mathematics and science if they’re serious about a future in aviation.

“These subjects are fundamental if you want to enter this field,” he said.

“To those passionate about aviation, don’t miss out on the bursary opportunities we have available. Applications close on November 8, and we urge learners to take advantage of it.”

Adding to the experience, the senior corporate services manager for cluster 1 at Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), Samkelo Radebe, spoke about the impact of the tour.

“These school visits are about more than just seeing the airport; they’re about opening doors. We believe in giving back to our communities and involving them in our projects. This tour gave learners a better understanding of the many career possibilities in aviation.”

Radebe noted the enthusiasm of the grades 10 and 11 learners, who are at a pivotal stage in planning their future careers.

Learners got learn about tools that used when fighting fire.

“The learners asked critical questions and showed an interest in how things work at the airport. The atmosphere was upbeat and filled with curiosity, which made for a successful day.”
