Founded in 2024, Thalukanyo Dza Vhathu is a new NPO established with the mission of addressing the pressing issues of crime, poverty, and hunger that plague the Thembisa community.
The founder, Nonhlanhla Maphangula, was driven to take action after witnessing first-hand the daily struggles many face in her community.
Realising the growing gap in supporting the youth and vulnerable families, Maphangula launched the NPO to offer meaningful intervention.

Thalukanyo Dza Vhathu focuses on assisting child-led households, where parents or guardians have died, as well as families in need of food, blankets, and other necessities.
The organisation also steps in during crises such as floods, heavy rains, or fires, which are common in the area’s informal settlements.
“Our goal is to offer short-term aid and to work towards providing long-term solutions for financial and food security,” said Maphangula.
One of the organisation’s recent projects involved a major clean-up effort in the yard of a resident hoarding items, creating health hazards for the surrounding community.
The project presented unique challenges for the NPO – with logistics and handling the delicate emotions of the residents they were helping.
“When we first approached the situation, we wanted to make sure we did not belittle the individual, but instead offer genuine assistance,” said Maphangula.

“It was a delicate balance. On one hand, we wanted to help clean up the property, but on the other, we had to be mindful of their feelings.
“This experience reminded us how disconnected communities can become, and how important our work is in restoring those bonds.”
Despite the important work being done, Thalukanyo Dza Vhathu faces significant challenges, particularly in funding.
Much of the aid they provide, whether food, blankets, or other resources, comes directly from the pockets of Maphangula and her team.

“We need more sponsors and partners to help us expand our reach and continue making an impact,” she said.
“Any assistance, no matter how small, can help put a smile on someone’s face.”
As the NPO looks to the future, Maphangula has big plans.
“You can expect more impactful, youth-focused programs and more collaborations with other organisations. We want to extend our support to more communities in need,” she added.
