Kempton Park doctor still strives for excellence after three decades

Local paediatrician shares a bit of insight into his work and journey in the medical field.

Dr Johannes Cornelius de Witt is a paediatrician at Arwyp Medical Centre and a long-time resident of Kempton Park.

He attended primary school in Pomona and matriculated from Hoërskool Kempton Park.

He went on to obtain his medical degree at the University of Pretoria in 1984 and returned for his MMed specialisation in paediatrics at the same tertiary institution.

During the early years of Arwyp, the hospital didn’t have a maternity or paediatrics service.

In consultation with the management at that time, it was decided to start a paediatric service at Arwyp.

With Kempton Park as his hometown, De Witt envisioned that he could importantly assist the community.

De Witt was involved when the conjoined Lowton twins were separated in a historical operation that was performed by a team of specialists in Arwyp Hospital in September of 2007.

“I have been in private practice at Arwyp Hospital for 32 years. I would say I bring a host of experience as a generalist paediatrician to my patients and I strive to achieve good patient outcomes,” he said.

Currently serving as the chairperson of the Medical Advisory Committee at the hospital, he stated that the committee is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety and quality at Arwyp Medical Centre.

Arwyp’s mission is to provide expert guidance and oversight, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation and collaboration among the medical staff.

“Outside my practice, I enjoy golfing, spending time with my family and reading about current paediatric advances.”

De Witt said he believes healthy children are the foundation of a thriving community, and he is honoured to support the health and happiness of the children in Ekurhuleni.
