CoE – Save the environment, plant trees

The scorching summer days are almost here. Planting a tree is great for extra shade that has a cooling effect.

The CoE will join hands with the nation to mark Arbor Month celebrations during September by encouraging the public to plant a tree and save the environment.

“There are many environmental benefits of planting a tree, such as contributing to the fight against climate change.

“Trees reduce soil erosion, provide shade, increase soil fertility and help absorb moisture,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Annually, two trees are usually highlighted to be celebrated. One is common, and the other is a rare species.”

This year’s common tree of the year is the Searsia lancea, a shade tree good for gardens and street pavements.

“It produces sweet-scented flowers and attracts insects like bees.”

Euphorbia sekukuniensis is the rare tree of the year.

“Sekhukhune naboom, as it is affectionately known in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, flourishes in the hot climate, prefers rocky areas and produces flowers that attract butterflies, bees and other insects,” said Dlamini.

“The city is an industrial hub, with increased levels of carbon emission, so it is important to encourage planting trees to release oxygen to conserve the environment,” he said.
