Future of EMPD chief of police to be decided following serious allegations

He is facing charges of misconduct, sexual harassment, and the harassment of two female metro police officers.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) held an extraordinary council meeting on September 4 to discuss the future of the EMPD chief of police, Isaac Mapiyeye, amid serious allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct.

The council deliberated for six hours on the allegations, which surfaced in July when a victim reported sexual harassment and intimidation and provided medical evidence.

Mapiyeye faces accusations of misconduct, sexual harassment, and harassment of two female EMPD officers.

The council could not decide on Tuesday and postponed the matter for seven days to allow proper procedures to be followed.

They are considering a report recommending Mapiyeye’s suspension and an independent investigation within 30 days.

Ekurhuleni mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza has requested more time to review the report thoroughly before any council action.

The speaker of the council, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, emphasised the need to follow due process, ensuring both the protection of the victim and allowing Mapiyeye the opportunity to defend himself.

The EFF accused the ANC and DA of protecting Mapiyeye, calling for his immediate suspension.

EFF provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga criticised the delay in addressing the allegations.

“Mayor Xhakaza has delayed action in a matter of serious concern,” Dunga stated.

The ANC’s Jongizizwe Dlabathi denied protecting Mapiyeye, stressing the importance of following proper procedures.

“We are not defending the suspect but want the matter handled legally,” Dlabathi explained.

ActionSA caucus leader Siyanda Makhubo called for a leadership overhaul within the EMPD, citing allegations of misconduct involving not only Mapiyeye but also deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi.

“This shows how rotten the EMPD is, and action must be taken,” Makhubo said.
