Frustrations boil over for Klipfontein residents following water shortage

Community members said they had had enough of relying on water tankers when their neighbouring communities had access to running water.

The community of Klipfontein Ext 1 staged a protest recently along two busy roads in the area.

The protest aimed to highlight the community’s ongoing struggle for reliable access to water.

Community members said they were tired of a lack of service delivery in their area.

The community of Klipfontein is in woes because of the water crisis.

According to residents, water scarcity was the biggest problem.

At the time of the protest, the community had been without water for three weeks and frustrations boiled over.
Residents took to the streets barricading some major through roads with burning tires.

Community members who spoke to The Thembisan said they had had enough of relying on water tankers when their neighbouring communities had access to running water.

Tumelo Chidi, a resident in the area, said as a father, this situation has been traumatising for his family.

“We have extensions that had no water problems, yet our area suffers without water.

“I have spent money on takeaways when I could have made proper food for my child but the water situation did not allow this.

“We have neighbours privileged enough to fetch water from their close friends, but what about others who do not have cars to do so?

The community of Klipfontein is in woes because of the water crisis.

“Many people have been suffering in silence.

“We chose to take a stand against the councillor and those at the top because our water crisis has not changed for weeks.”

The councillor, Dimakatso Moloisane, who was at the protest, struggled to speak with the community but said he would be in contact with officials from Joburg Water.
