Ekurhuleni public swimming pools ready for spring
Ekurhuleni's public swimming pools will be opened for public access on September 3, marking the beginning of the new season.
In response to recent discussions regarding the state of public swimming pools in Ekurhuleni, the city has provided detailed updates on the matter.
As the start of September approaches, the city was asked whether it would continue its tradition of opening public swimming pools to welcome the community.

According to city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, Ekurhuleni’s public swimming pools will be opened for public access on September 3, marking the beginning of the new season.
Dlamini highlighted that several maintenance projects were completed during the offseason, including the installation of new pumps at various pools.
Regarding the Gerdview Swimming Pool, Dlamini noted that individuals interested in leasing the facility are encouraged to submit their applications, which will undergo departmental assessment.
The pump at Gerdview has been installed, and the pool is scheduled to open in September, pending the availability of contracted lifeguards.
The city also completed several other maintenance activities across Ekurhuleni, including:
• Minor maintenance and repairs.
• Repairs and maintenance at Vosloorus Swimming Pool.
• Draining, acid washing, and refilling of swimming pools.
• Gardening, tree pruning, and flower bed upkeep.
• Maintenance and new paving installation at Thokoza Pool.
• Paving and building maintenance at Alra Swimming Pool.

The following pools are ready for the September opening:

However, challenges persist. The only heated indoor Olympic-sized pool in Gauteng, located in Boksburg North, remains closed due to budget
constraints, which have prevented the City from addressing structural issues and equipment damage.
Heat pumps and air conditioners inside the dome require repairs, and a leak in the main pump of the filter room has yet to be fixed.
Dlamini also addressed the situation at Van Dyk Park Swimming Pool in Boksburg, where approximately R9 million was spent on reconstruction in 2021.
Despite these efforts, the facility has been closed since early 2023.
The pool pumps were damaged during load shedding, and while they have been replaced, further electrical issues have been discovered.
These problems have been reported for repair, and the matter is receiving attention. Dlamini emphasised that infrastructure vandalism continues to strain the City’s finances and hinder overall development, urging the community to collaborate in addressing this challenge.
