Local NPO offers food parcels to the needy

To reach more people, the organisation enlisted the help of local churches and social services to assist in locating families that need assistance.

Local NPO, Vaakatiko, recently offered much-needed distress relief to struggling families in the community when its volunteers handed out food parcels.

For the food drive, the dignitaries and community leader, Jojo Mashaba, joined volunteers from the organisation.

They visited the homes of those less fortunate in the Sthama Section, Thembisa, to deliver the food parcels.

The NPO organised the food delivery as a way of giving back to the community in a meaningful way.

One of the Vaakatiko founders said it was the NPO’s first food drive.

“It was such a great experience. We wanted to give hope to struggling families in our community and let them know that, after stormy days, there are sunny days.

Local NPO, Vaakatiko, recently offered much-needed distress relief to struggling families in the community when its volunteers handed out food parcels.

“We always try to go beyond and hope we can continue to offer a helping hand where we can.

“We hope that giving food parcels is just the beginning of an amazing journey with our community,” said Rebisi.

Before the event, volunteers from Vaakatiko contacted community leaders in the area to find out which families would benefit most from the donation.

The community leader, Mashaba, helped the organisation identify those he believed were in greatest need of the food parcels.

“Their efforts are not only helping immediate needs but also investing in the well-being and development of individuals, especially children and elders in disadvantaged communities,” said Mashaba.

Once the list of families was confirmed, volunteers set out to prepare the food parcels.

To make their vision a reality, Vaakatiko volunteers enlisted the help of various corporates to donate food items for the parcels.

Volunteer and founder of Vaakatiko, Thabang Mashela said food parcels are a temporary solution.

“When we visited some homes, we got a better understanding of the situation some of them are in.

“Giving out food is a short-term solution. We aim to assist the unemployed in those families by sourcing opportunities for them to take care of their families,” said Mashela.

Vaakatiko thanked Pomona-based Dachser Intelligence Logistics for donations towards the food drive.
