Kempton Park SPCA calls for support from public

The SPCA in Kempton Park boasts a long and proud history.

The organisation seeks committee members to join it to ensure it continues serving the community by preventing animal cruelty.

“We seek dedicated people who can commit time, effort and expertise voluntarily,” said the NSPCA’s compliance officer for the society liaison unit, Jaimin Patel.

“The SPCA Kempton Park will never turn away an animal. We remind the public that a qualified inspector has the power of a police officer in terms of the Animals Protection Act.

“We care for and protect animals. We educate without being afraid of taking decisive for the prosecution of those cruelly treating animals,” said Patel.

Each SPCA is an independently registered NPO responsible for its own survival.

“Of course, the key factor is funding, especially because no financial support comes from government and any income from a municipal source is not a grant but payment for services rendered either in connection with enforcing by-laws or taking in stray animals,” said Patel.

The primary reason the SPCAs have closed over the past 20 years is the lack of community support.

“Each SPCA needs an elected management committee comprised of local people – the body which manages the SPCA itself by planning, financial oversight, organisation, raising funds and thereby ensuring the SPCA’s future.

“We are looking for individuals who share a passion for animal welfare and are willing to assist by bringing their skills and experience and giving of their time, all on an unpaid basis.

“Far too often, when an SPCA finds itself in financial difficulty, well-meaning people come forward, offering to help by raising funds.

“This is deeply appreciated, but ensuring the existence of an SPCA is an around-the-clock and long-term function which has to be vested in the community,” said Patel.
