Local foundation brings hope to the homeless

The Chesa Foundation founded by Tshepo Phaho was launched in December last year to make a difference in the community, especially in the lives of the homeless.

Residents of Birchleigh joined hands with the Chesa Foundation on July 6 to assist the homeless.

During the event, homeless members of the community received a hearty meal.

Phaho said there are many homeless people around Birchleigh.

He added he was trying his best to help wherever he possibly could.

“Feeding the homeless makes me feel like I am making a difference.

“You must never judge people until you walk a mile in their shoes. There are many homeless people and even more people in need around Birchleigh,” said Phaho.

The Chesa Foundation has no sponsors, and members use their own funds to prepare food for the homeless.

The foundation members also gather all their unwanted clothing items to hand out to those who need it most.
Phaho said the foundation needs sponsors to continue to help those less fortunate.

“As much as we love what we do, we cannot help as many people as we would like to. We need sponsors so we can do it more.

“Now that it is winter, we need warm clothes, blankets and anything people can donate to help us.

“The community is assisting wherever they can, and we appreciate it.

“Our hope and dream is to grow the foundation so that we do not only assist in Birchleigh but wherever there is a need,” said Phaho.

He added several people in the community assisted him, including Itumeleng Ndala, who made sure that each person who arrived on the day was fed.

Ndala said she loves helping out because she understands not everyone is as privileged.

“I am passionate about helping those who are in need. People are going through many challenges and those of us who have a little bit more than others have to help where we possibly can.

Kelly Naidoo said helping those in need is vital.

“We have assisted Tshepo and the Chesa Foundation on a few occasions and it has always been a privilege to provide a little comfort. We will certainly do whatever is within our means to help in future,” she said.
