Kempton Park Community celebrates Mandela Day at Tshegofatsa Rona

City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza thanked everyone who spent 67 minutes for Mandela Day with the shelter.

Tshegofatsa Rona Welfare and Community Organisation received an influx of visitors from around Ekurhuleni on Mandela Day.

The organisation runs a shelter based in Kempton Park that provides a safe space for abused women and children.

The shelter and organisation is run by Cynthia Dinalane, who has won multiple awards worldwide for her work in combatting gender-based violence.

Dinalane said she was grateful so many people visited her organisation on Mandela Day.

“When you see people arriving to help it gives you courage and motivation. I didn’t expect so many people,” said Dinalane.

Mandela Day visitors to Tshegofatsa Rona included the City of Ekurhuleni, McDonald’s Kempton Park and Norkem Park, Old Mutual, SADF and SPAR Glen Marais.

Donations that were brought to Tshegofatsa Rona Welfare and Community Organisation.

Donations of all sorts were dropped off.

Dinalane said she does not receive any sort of funding and the items donated would assist her greatly.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said that Mandela Day is dedicated to helping those who are in need and the city saw it fit to visit Tshegofatsa Rona shelter and help them in any way they can.

“Everyone in the shelter, including the founder, is one of us and we must take a good care of them, they need us.

“I would like to thank everyone who showed up and gave something to the shelter. Your help is needed, recognised and appreciated,” said Dlamini.

All the visitors to Tshegofatsa Rona were given a chance to tour the facility.

Pastor Linah Ngcobo, Zanele Katembo (HoD of Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture), Nkosindiphile Xhakaza (City of Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor), Cynthia Dinalane (Tshegofatsa Rona Welfare and Community Organisation founder), and Sivuyile Ngodwana (MMC Corporate and Shared Services).

“It gives Mam’ Cynthia courage to continue helping those in need,” said Xhakaza.

Taal Net Kempton Park School, Ward 15 Clr Amanda Davison and MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Sivuyile Ngodwana, were also present to spend Mandela Day at the shelter.

One of Tshegofatsa Rona Welfare and Community Organisation beneficiaries shared her story with the visitors.
