Kempton Park SAPS warns of increase in fraud cases

"The community is warned to never pay online for a product they have not received.”

Kempton Park SAPS has warned community members to be alert as fraud cases continue to increase.

“Perpetrators use social media, emails and SMS messages to lure unsuspecting victims,” said Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Dipuo Ditshego.

“We have received an alarming number of fraud reports. Scammers will either falsely sell or buy internet-advertised products or send a message or email pretending to be bank representatives,” she added.

Ditshego encouraged residents to be vigilant and not rely on the internet for any purchase and bank account transactions.

“Criminals have realised the convenience of internet banking and marketing and they are taking advantage of it. The community is warned to never pay online for a product they have not received.”

Ditshego added that when selling items online residents should not allow strangers into their homes.
“Select a public place to conduct business transactions.”

Additionally, she advised residents to not share their banking details over the phone or on the internet.

“If you suspect the person you are dealing with is a fraudster, contact your bank and cancel your card immediately.
