Oil dumping along Pondola River Drive worries locals

The Kempton Express visited the area recently and found the oil spill had been cleaned up.

Birch Acres Ext 4 residents are concerned after oil was dumped in the river along Pondola River Drive.

One resident, Phillip Ndlovu* said he usually goes to the river to pray and collect herbs for traditional medicine.

On one of his trips, he discovered oil in the waterway.

“The water was green from the oil.

“It was very concerning for me because not only do I pray there, but I also get my herbs from the plantations around the river.

“I am not sure if I can keep going there for my herbs,” he said.

Ndlovu said he suspects one of the businesses near the river was responsible for dumping the oil.

The Kempton Express visited the area recently and found the oil spill had been cleaned up.

City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, spoke to the Kempton Express.

“The city was not aware of oil dumping at any river or stream in recent weeks.

“We investigate all incidents that come to our attention as and when they occur,” he said.

He added those responsible for pollution are charged according to the National Water Act and the National Environmental Management Act because this is indeed a crime.

Additionally, Dlamini said residents should immediately report pollution to the municipality through 0860 54 3000 or the MyCoE App.

These will assist in gathering the necessary evidence to identify the responsible party and ensure they are held accountable for their actions.

In conclusion, Dlamini said the city has standard campaigns that teach residents and school children the importance of water and environmental issues.
