Moeletsi Foundation cleans up Phomolong

“We want to ensure that the area is clean. The community was really pleased when they saw us cleaning up and many even joined us.”

Model Colleen Moeletsi, together with her organisation, Moeletsi Foundation, recently undertook a community clean-up in celebration of Youth Month.

The initiative saw the finalists from various pageants across Gauteng take hands to clean the Phomolong area.
Residents and informal traders were pleased with the initiative.

The team was also joined by the community, which came out in large numbers. Residents said they were concerned about illegal activities in the community.

Moeletsi said her mantra to success is sustainability. “The pageant I am participating in focuses on the sustainability of the community.

When we assessed the situation, my team and I chose to stand up and do a clean-up in Thembisa.

“We want to ensure that the area is clean. The community was really pleased when they saw us cleaning up and many even joined us.”

She said that the goal was to protect the area from future decay.

“We tried our best as a team,” she said.

Moeletsi said lack of knowledge hinders success in communities.

“My observation when doing the clean-up was a lack of knowledge within the community. We need to educate our community about the danger of illegal dumping and the impact it has on the environment.

“We need more engagement from the municipality and propose that they can put giant bins to help lessen the rise of illegal dumping.

“There is also a need for more engagement from both communities and the municipal officials to ensure that the community is safe and clean to live in.”
