Ekurhuleni offers indigent relief programme to cash-strapped households

Properties with a municipal value not exceeding R1 500 000 as per the city’s valuation roll are eligible for registration, valid for a reviewable period of 36 months.

The CoE urges households facing financial hardships and struggling to afford basic services, such as sanitation, water, refuse removal, and electricity, to register for its indigent relief programme at nearby customer care centres (CCCs).

Households must register or be deemed indigent to qualify for the indigent relief programme.

Properties with a municipal value not exceeding R500 000 automatically qualify as indigent households.

The programme offers a comprehensive social package to alleviate financial burdens and enhance the quality of life for eligible residents.

The benefits include:
• 100% rebate on assessment rates;
• free refuse removal services;
• 50kWh of free electricity monthly;
• 6kl of water and sewer services monthly;
• Free indigent burial services for registered and deemed indigents;
• Special rates on emergency services like ambulance and firefighting.

Eligibility criteria for the programme include residency in the CoE, age over 18 years (including financially dependent minors), SA citizenship or possession of a permanent residence certificate, and a combined monthly household income less than two times the monthly minimum wage for Area A domestic workers (currently R8 134.40).

Applicants must submit various documents depending on their category, including ID copies, birth certificates for dependents, the latest municipal account statement, and proof of income or lack thereof (such as SASSA pension statements or employment verification).
