Department of Agriculture empowers businesses in Oakmoor

The department undertook the initiative to work with community traders to ensure business operations align with the proper health procedures.

During a food and safety awareness day at Mehlareng Stadium on June 21, the Department of Agriculture gave four Oakmoor business owners safety equipment to help them with hygienic food handling processes.

The equipment given to business owners will ensure they run their businesses in a clean habitat to prevent harmful germs.

During the event, Jerry Chaka, director of environmental health at the COE spoke about the Department of Health’s concern for the environment where informal traders conduct business.

He said these traders violated most regulations and they do not follow the health protocols properly. “This poses health risks.”

The department undertook this initiative to work with community traders to ensure business operations align with the proper health procedures.

Christine Moumakee, chairperson of the Food Forum at the Gauteng Department of Health, handed the items to the chosen business owners.

The items included a rubbish bin, tray, knife and a safety basket to store chicken. It also included an apron and safety boots.

Ntabiseng Matimana said the gear would help her run the business smoothly.

“As a person in the food-selling business, most of what I receive will ensure that I serve customers in a clean environment.

“We needed these for some time, and the department came through for us. I believe this will improve our businesses.”

Dikeledi Kgatla shared her feelings about the gifts she received from the event proceedings.

“I feel relieved being one of the recipients, and they knew how much I needed this gear and how helpful it would be to me and my business.

“As I check the gear, I can identify a lot of essentials that can help me expand my business, but mostly ensure that where I run my business is safe and clean for the customers.”

The awareness played a significant role in starting a greater relationship between informal traders and the health department.
