Kempton Park SPCA gives tips on taking care of pets this winter

Use heaters cautiously because animals might get closer than they should, and don’t leave pets unattended near fireplaces and/or heaters.

The Kempton Park SPCA has urged residents to bring their pets inside during the cold weather.

“If you are cold, they are certainly cold,” said SPCA manager Kira Sparrow.

She added that short-haired pets feel the cold more.

Sparrow offered residents tips to help care for their pets during winter:

• Protect their paws.

• Take care of their coat and skin because grooming remains essential in winter, but washing your dog as often is unnecessary. Brushing them and keeping their coat in good condition is crucial.

• Antifreeze is a deadly poison, so prevent any chemical spills near your pets.

• Know your pet’s limits outdoors. It might be enough time outside if they are shivering or have a hunched-over back with their tail between their legs. Watch for hypothermia.

• Check your car’s engine. Many animals seek the engine area’s warmth. Also, check near the tyres before driving.

• Use heaters cautiously because animals might get closer than they should, and don’t leave pets unattended near fireplaces and/or heaters.

• A dry, draft-free shelter large enough to allow them to move comfortably but small enough to retain body heat is ideal. Ensure their kennel or bed is off the ground.

• Animals might eat more in winter to produce more energy.

Sparrow said the SPCA needs blankets and dry cat and dog food.

“Kitten and puppy pellets are the first prizes.”

She thanked everyone who donated to the SPCA and urged residents to continue donating to them.
