Suspect nabbed at OR Tambo trying to flee SA

Officers from the unit led an investigation into Pillay and co-accused Michael Philip Adam (55) after their implication in the BHI Ponzi scheme case.

The Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Unit arrested Sona Pillay (54) on May 31 when he tried to flee SA.

Officers from the unit led an investigation into Pillay and co-accused Michael Philip Adam (55) after their implication in the BHI Ponzi scheme case.

To date, the investigation into the scheme has seen the conviction and sentencing of 60-year-old Graig Roy Warriner to 25 years imprisonment on 206 counts of fraud and one of contravening the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act for operating an investment scheme without a license or being registered as a financial service provider.

Pillay was arrested on May 31 after he attempted to flee overseas.

There, he was refused entry and sent back to the SA.

On his arrival, the Hawks’ investigating team was waiting for him.

Adam handed himself to police on the morning of June 3.

The pair subsequently appeared in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
