Ward 25 sewage system to be upgraded

The Pomona Phase 2 and 3 section of the line, which is linked to the Serengeti Pump Station, is set to be completed on June 30, 2025.

Residents in East Side Manor and Pomona have battled for years with frequent sewage blockages.

The blockages often cause effluent to erupt out of the drains on properties and inside homes.

This is according to Ward 25 Clr Marinda Beukes.

She said that capacity constraints on the department’s side have added to the woes of residents who have patiently waited for a solution.

“In response to questions posed by the DA surrounding the sewage line upgrade programme, the Water and Sanitation Department stated that the aim of the programme is to increase the sewer capacity from bulk so that the sewers from the network systems are accommodated,” she said.

She added that, according to the answers provided, the sewerage challenges faced by residents in Begonia Street, Agapanthus Street and Tugela Road will be resolved once this process is completed.

“We welcome the progress made on the project.

CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini spoke to the Kempton Express.

“Ward 25 started experiencing sewage problems a few years back, and this was mainly caused by illegal stormwater ingress.

“The problem leading to the blockages of sewages in the ward included capacity challenges, foreign objects, vandalism of infrastructure, load-shedding, and natural causes,” he said.

He added that Ward 25 might have sewage problems again as long as the above-mentioned factors continue.

“The City would like to advise residents to stop the illegal dumping of foreign objects in the sewer network and report vandalism of infrastructure.

“The City will further request a support team to assist with education and awareness to the residents,” he said.
