Teanong residents plead for sewage leak to be fixed

The matter remains unsolved, and the community has lost hope of it being repaired.

Residents in Teanong have urged the authorities to intervene after a sewage spill has not been resolved for over a month.

On February 28, community members reported the matter to Ward 9 Clr Nomvula Malinga.

According to residents, the sewage flowing down the road poses a health risk.

When the incident was reported to the councillor, six houses on the street were affected.

Residents said the authorities provided little response and they were forced to go about their day-to-day activities with the discomfort from unattended burst sewage.

The matter remains unsolved, and the community has lost hope of being repaired.

Community member Pontso Mofokeng said the residents are uncomfortable living in the conditions they find themselves in.

“At this rate, we are unable to open the windows due to the smell from these leaks. Our children cannot play freely, as these leakages raise health hazards to them and us who are subjected to live here, as these are our homes.

“We are traumatised when we think of what this mess has caused to our families and our daily activities”.

Malinga said the matter was escalated to the relevant departments.

“With regards to the blocked sewer and waste collection, the community was not getting assistance. I have escalated the matter to the head of the department, as well as the MMCs for water and sanitation and also environment and waste management.

“I have not received any communications from them.”
