Thembisa Golf Club holds second annual Chairman’s Cup

According to Monyanyedi, Thabo Phetoane played some of the best golf on the day of the Chairman's Cup, faltering only once on the 17th hole.

The Tembisa Golf Club (TGF) held its second Chairman’s Cup at Kempton Park Country Club on February 11.

Thabo Phetoane, TGF’s own, was crowned as the champion.

Benjamin Monyanyedi, from the club, said as with the previous year, DEE Holdings sponsored the event.

The event received sponsorship of R50 000, which included a cow, the water holes, a gala dinner, a videographer, a photographer, golfing apparel for all Tembisa Golf Club executive committee members and a DJ for the gala evening.

Eighty players participated in the tournament.

“The 2023 winner and defending champion Nzima Tsotetsi together with pre-tournament favourites Ayanda Jaco, Allistair Magumise and Mzwandile Mahlangu who had it tough on the day and faded out of the top five,” said Monyanyedi.

Winner Thabo Phetoane and Douglas Dube (sponsor).

“Steve Mbewe, Reuben Motsomotso, Andries Maenetja, and other contenders were left to fight it out for the prizes on offer, a trophy plus a whole month’s wear of golfing apparel sponsored to him by DEE Holdings.”

According to Monyanyedi, Thabo Phetoane played some of the best golf on the day of the Chairman’s Cup, faltering only once on the 17th hole.

“A great recovery from the bunker at the 18th and final hole, followed by a brilliant one-putt, ensured the soft-spoken man walked away with half of the beast in great weather conditions.”

Steve Mbewe, stormed through the field to take second place.

“Mbewe claimed second place after carding a score of minus two, only a shot behind Phetoane. Mbewe took home the second biggest chunk of the cow carcass,” said Monyanyedi.

He said Thulani Nodagala came third after a fine performance to claim the third-largest chunk of the cow and he also will have enough beef for the next few months in his freezer.

Onismus Mphela placed fourth and Matome Maenetja fifth.

Monyanyedi said four ancillary prizes included two nearest the pins and two longest drives.

He said Mbewe and Tau Nkomo were the winners of the nearest pins at holes number five and 17.

The longest-drive winners at number one and 14 were Alistair Magumise and Mzwandile Mahlangu.

Each one of them pocketed R500 for their efforts.

“The sponsor, Douglas Dube of DEE, once again reaffirmed a 2025 sponsorship and promised to make it much bigger,“ said Monyanyedi.

“The TGC exco and its members were in awe after this event, which marked the beginning of 2024, which already promises to be as massive as the cow cup.”
