TAXI STRIKE: Services suspended in parts of Ekurhuleni
According to Santaco, taxi services in Germiston, Thembisa, Benoni and Katlehong will remain suspended until further notice.
This morning, March 7, commuters in Ekurhuleni woke up to news that taxi services had been suspended following a disagreement between the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and Jr Chueu bus services.
Thousands across Ekurhuleni were left stranded.
Santaco national spokesperson Rebecca Phala has confirmed the strike.
“We can confirm that our taxi operations are temporarily suspended in Germiston, Thembisa, Benoni and Katlehong.

“We urge South Africans to bear with us as an urgent meeting between two parties has been arranged and we will release an update with a clear way forward.
“We would like to apologize to our commuters who are at the receiving end of this unfortunate event,” said Phala.
Taxi services remain suspended until further notice.

“The EMPD wishes to confirm the taxi strike, which erupted this morning, causing disruption within the City of Ekurhuleni.
“Police officials have been deployed to monitor the situation, across the three regions of the City,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.

“It is unclear what the cause for the strike is, but investigations are underway, at this moment we cannot speculate on the circumstances,” she added.
