Flying squad catches man in possession of unlicensed firearm and dagga

BFS officers arrested a 37-year-old suspect after they discovered dagga, a sought firearm and live ammunition.

Benoni Flying Squad members arrested one suspect, recovered a firearm and seized dagga on January 29.

At around 06:15, officers patrolling the N12 highway just before Etwatwa off-ramp noticed a white Toyota Hilux travelling in the direction of Benoni.

Firearm and ammunition seized.

The vehicle started accelerating over the speed limit, which prompted members to react. The driver ignored officers instruction to stop and a chase ensued.

The Hilux was eventually brought to a stop at Hield and Sigalo streets, Daveyton.

A 9mm Norinco pistol with seven live rounds of ammunition was found for which the driver could not produce a licence.

The firearm serial number was tested and it was discovered to be stolen on a Jouberton case reported in 1998.

Dagga seized.

A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of two large bags of dagga with an approximate weight of around 25kg.

The 37-year-old suspect was arrested. He will be appearing in the Daveyton Magistrate Court where he will face charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as possession of drugs.
