Local runners come together for parkrun at Gillooly’s Farm

Gillooly’s parkrun provides a safe environment for runners.

Runners and fitness enthusiasts flocked to Gillooly’s Farm on January 27 for the parkrun.

Hundreds of runners visit the park every Saturday for the 08:00 take-off.

The free, fun and friendly 5km run/walk or jog event creates a safe space for runners and fitness enthusiasts.
Ian Gibson, co-director of the race, said they are looking for volunteers.

Primrose resident Monekay Kabongo (18) came out tops at the Gillooly’s parkrun on Saturday morning.

“It’s good for learners to do their community service. I encourage parents to sign their children up to volunteer. Our parkrun is family-oriented and has become a social event for the community,” said Gibson.

Volunteer Dawie van Vuuren has done 113 parkruns and has clocked 167 volunteer times at Gillooly’s parkrun.

He encouraged young and old to enjoy the parkrun.

“I love it because you are competing against yourself. You go at your own pace and it is a pet-friendly environment,” said Van Vuuren.

Visitors from Alberton, Sarah Kotze and Michelle van Deventer shared that it was a beautiful experience.

Runners Chris Mindszenty and Garry de Mello Koch enjoy the morning breeze.

“I think we will be coming back. It is relaxing with the view of the dam and the ducks,” they shared.

Another volunteer Liz Gibson said, “The parkrun offers a gateway to more running and contributes towards becoming healthier. It gives people of all abilities an opportunity to be out in the open,” she said.
