Man injured in Birchleigh gas explosion

Allegedly, liquid petroleum gas leaking out of one of the four cylinders found in the building caused the explosion.

One person was injured when a gas cylinder at a business property in Birchleigh exploded on January 22.

It is believed liquid petroleum gas (LPG) leaking from one of four cylinders found in the building caused the explosion.

According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, rescue teams swiftly responded to the scene after receiving the call.

“The call, received through the Life Threatening Call centre, saw resources dispatched 09:10.”

Other stakeholders, including the SAPS and EMPD, also responded.

“On arrival, they found extensive damage to windows and doors, and walls out of alignment,” said Ntladi.

“A structural engineer was requested for an inspection. Neighbouring businesses had to close for safety reasons and until completion of the necessary inspections,” he added.

The walls are out of alignment because of the explosion.

“A male patient sustained serious injuries and was medically treated on scene by paramedics before transportation to the nearest medical facility by ambulance,” said Ntladi.
