EMPD urges motorists to be cautious when driving in the rain

Be aware of vehicles and do not run across a road if there is poor visibility.

Following heavy rainfall in some parts of the CoE last week, the EMPD’s media liaison officer, Thabiso Makgatho, urges motorists and road users to take it easy on the roads.

These safety tips from EMPD will help motorists stay safe:

• Reduce speed and keep a safe following distance.

• Avoid braking suddenly because it could cause the vehicle to skid.

• Switch on the headlights.

• Ensure the windscreen and wipers are in good condition.

• Slow down before entering standing water and avoid low-lying bridges.

• Pedestrians should navigate by using sidewalks and parking lots and keep their hands as free as possible to help maintain their balance.

• Be aware of vehicles and do not run across a road if there is poor visibility.

• Pedestrians should avoid jaywalking.

• Pedestrians must cross a road at designated crossings and traffic lights.

• Look out for water puddles and manholes.

“Please be safe on wet roads,” said Makgatho.
