House burned down in Ebony Park

Family in need of donations after their house burns down.

On December 12, a local family’s house in Poppy Crescent, Ebony Park Ext 4, caught fire.

Their belongings were destroyed, and they were left without a place to live.

A lit candle caused the fire it seems that that tore through the house at around 02:00.

The damaged house.

The candle was used presumably because the Moeketsi family had been without electricity for more than five months due to a faulty transformer.

Neighbours were awakened by the family members’ cries and shouting, and at first thought a domestic fight was taking place until they saw smoke rising from the house.

The surrounding community immediately came to the aid of their neighbours, breaking windows to help the family escape the fire.

Ivory Park Fire Station was notified of the emergency. One of the family members, Boitumelo Moeketsi, said they arrived an hour later, leaving the house completely damaged and treasures reduced to ashes.

“We’ve lost a lot, and we’re rather disappointed since this is the time of year when we should be spending time with our families.

“This is our grandparents’ house where we received so much warmth and happiness.

A candle that was lit ignited a devastating fire that tore through the house.

“We treasured many things in this home, so seeing all my grandparents had worked so hard to achieve reduced to ashes made us feel depressed. All of the memories have turned to ash.”
