Rain brings winter fire season to an end

Gauteng has recorded 207 fires this fire season. It is estimated that 9812 hectors of grass had been burnt during the season.

The first good rains have started, bringing the Working on Fire programme in Gauteng closer to the end of the winter fire season.

According to Stephen Boyes, GM in Gauteng, the province has recorded 207 fires this fire season.

It is estimated that 9 812 hectares of grass had been burnt during the season.

Boyes said the standbys for the 15 teams across the province will come to an end because the fire risk is at minimal levels.

‘‘We applaud our firefighters and base partners for having worked tirelessly during the fire season. Our firefighters were equally fit to combat fires and their safety is my number one priority,’’ said Boyes.

He said the firefighters will continue to battle blazes that may break out during that period.

“We noticed the spike in fire callouts in August with 71 fires recorded. This was massive but expected. September we saw a drastic decline to 29 fire callouts,” said Boyes.

Boyes said he is glad teams were of assistance to landowners and communities in saving lives and protecting the environment.
