Hoërskool Birchleigh holds a memorial service for slain teacher

A memorial service was held for teacher Heinrich Hamm, who was shot while cycling on November 18.

Hoërskool Birchleigh has lost one of its pillars.

Heinrich Hamm, an Afrikaans teacher and head of department at the school, was shot and killed on November 18 while cycling with his nephew and brother-in-law.

On Monday, Hoërskool Birchleigh hosted a memorial service in memory of Hamm.

His loved ones remembered him as an active person who had completed several Comrades and Two Oceans marathons.

They described him as a lover of art and music and having a passion for teaching.

Former Hoërskool Birchleigh principal Andre Gloy spoke on the kind of man Hamm was.

“I met him in 1991. Usually, people give small speeches, but not Hamm. He would intend to make a five-minute speech but would go on for 15 to 20 minutes. He was a man of many talents who loved people,” Gloy said.

The Hoërskool Birchleigh Band honoured him by performing an ensemble.
