Local musical band reaches competition finals

The finals will take place at the Sognage Johannesburg on September 30.

The De Pozi band has advanced to the finals stage of Taalgenoot’s Ruk en Rym style competition.

The finals will take place at the Sognage Johannesburg on September 30.

Ruk en Rym is a battle of the bands competition, focused on finding new alternative Afrikaans artists in South Africa and getting them together to shake the scene.

The synth-spired duo consist of Afrikaans poetic lyricist Dyllan de Beer and digital beat maker and shaker, Rossouw Treurnich.

Both de Beer and Treurnich were born and raised in Kempton Park. They attended Laerskool Van Riebeeck Park and Hoërskool Jeugland.

After university, they formed a band.

“If you listen to De Pozi’s music, the role that Kempton Park has played in our lives comes through as clear as day. We pay homage to our city.

“The city that shaped us and moulded us into the people that we are today. So to all the Kempton kids, if you are in Kempton Park or anywhere else in the world, just know that every song we make pays homage to you and your heart.

“Without you, our city will be just as empty and desolate as the Kempton Hospital. Go and listen to our song 1619. We made this song just for you,” said De Beer.

According to De Pozi’s manager Nicolene Joubert, to reach the finals, the group had to compete against other groups from across the country.

“I was aware that the band’s purpose would be to challenge social norms. I am extremely excited to see how boundaries will be pushed in the finals, as the band was very well received in the semi-finals. Additionally, we have some big stuff in the works,” said Joubert.

“Although De Pozi’s beats might sound foreign at first, you will reminisce with Kemptonian nostalgia.

“The project is in remembrance of Johan Jack Smith, former editor of Taalgenoot who suddenly died in the early stages of Ruk en Rym.

“We as musicians, supporters and lovers of local music, will forever be thankful for you creating this platform and Jaco van der Merwe for running with the project,” she added.

She said that the winners of Ruk en Rym will receive the opportunity to record two singles with Peach van Pletzen, at Planet Awesome.
