Ward Councillor, Simon Lapping raises concerns over safety of residents

The community's safety concerns raised by Councillor Simon Lappin have highlighted important issues that require quick addressing.

Residents in Ward 17 continue to experience poor service delivery.

According to ward councillor Simon Lapping, residents in his ward are raising concerns over crumbling infrastructure and basic services.

Lapping has voiced serious concerns about several safety issues in the neighbourhood to prioritise the safety of the locals.

“I am worried about the pipes that drug addicts have turned into improvised shelters at taxi rank in Kempton Park.

“These people purportedly participate in illegal activity as well as rob unsuspecting victims.”

To guarantee the security of the locals, Lapping has urged the City of Ekurhuleni to remove the pipes.

Lapping said another issue in the ward is that of contractors who routinely leave garbage on the ground without ever picking it up.

He said the carelessness not only endangers the lives of drivers but also adds to the general drivers but also adds to the general messiness of the region.

To maintain a clean and safe workplace for everyone, Lapping has asked for stronger standards and accountability for contractors.

Lapping has also brought up the condition of the Harambee bus stops, which he alleges are routinely filthy.

The councilman contends that tidy, well-kept public areas are crucial for the general well-being of both locals and visitors.

Lapping said he has pleaded with the appropriate authorities for routine upkeep and cleaning of the bus stations to enhance the neighbourhood’s overall appearance and safety.

He also drew attention to the lack of road safety signs in the Zuurfontein region, a matter which he said was “a serious worry given a past event that resulted in the death of a motorist owing to improper signage”.

“To avoid any additional accidents and to guarantee the safety of road users, I encourage local authorities to address this problem as soon as possible. I demand action as the ward’s representative.

“There is a pressing need for greater security measures, contractor responsibility and better upkeep of public areas.

“It is hoped that the appropriate authorities would act quickly to address these worries, resulting in a setting that is safer and more secure for all locals.”

The Kempton Express sent an enquiry about the matter to the City of Ekurhuleni on August 25.
