NWU beats local rugby team in finals

The players had a positive attitude and it will be a difficult task to select the practice group of 2023.

Barnard Stadium hosted the Valke Rugby Sevens Tournament on August 19.

The tournament saw 23 clubs fighting for cup glory.

Head coach for the Valke Sevens team, Stephen Els, said the purpose of the tournament was to identify new players and select them for the provincial teams.

He said the tournament was hosted by the Valke Rugby Union and will be an annual event moving forward, as it was before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Els said all players selected for the teams are older than 18.

“All the clubs and coaches were excited to see Sevens rugby get new life. The players had a positive attitude and it will be a difficult task to select the practice group of 2023.”

In the cup semi-final, NWU (North West University) in Vanderbijlpark beat Vereeniging. Benoni beat Boksburg.

In the cup final, NWU beat Benoni 38-14 and they were crowned the new provincial Rugby Seven’s champions.

Els spoke to the Kempton Express about the success of the tournament and future plans.

“The day was a huge success and the next club tournament will be held next year in February at Barnard Stadium.

The Valke Rugby Union plans to invite all schools in the region as well as a number of female teams to participate,” he said.
