Local couple celebrates 60 years of marriage

Gary and Jo-Anne were born in England and their youngest, Clair, was born in South Africa.

Marriage is a sacred union between two people who love each other.

“The wedding is just for a day, marriage is for a lifetime,” is what married couples usually say.

Getting married is the easy part, remaining married requires more from both individuals.

Carol and Raymond Garnet recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Originally from England, the couple moved to South Africa in 1970 after tying the knot.

“I was working for an aircraft company and I spoke to a guy who had been to South Africa before.

“He told me all about it and it seemed like a good place to live in. I came here on my own to have a look at it and then my wife and two children followed,” said Raymond.

The couple have three children.

Gary and Jo-Anne were born in England and their youngest, Clair, was born in South Africa.

Raymond said they have a lot of fond memories together, including dancing to Can’t Help Falling in Love with You by Elvis Presley at their wedding, but the one that stands out is their trip to Botswana, which they describe as amazing.

The couple told the Kempton Express that they are family orientated and their wish for their children and grandchildren is a happy and healthy life no matter where they are in the world.

“My advice to young couples is to get married and don’t tell yourself you can easily get divorced. Don’t let anything phase you.

“Put it all behind you. Forgive, forget, love and just carry on. The good Lord will see you through,” said Carol.
