Local pensioner’s home painted to honour Mandela Day

The pensioner’s house was cleaned, and the trees were trimmed.

The EMPD and other stakeholders spent their 67 minutes for Mandela Day with a struggling resident in Birch Acres.

EMPD media liaison officer Marie Mashishi said the EMPD Northern Region Community Safety Forum officers, the SAPS and various Ekurhuleni departments gave back 67 minutes by cleaning at the residence of a pensioner on Kronberg Road in Birch Acres.

The pensioner’s repainted house.

“Recently, during a crime prevention operation in the Birch Acres area, the EMPD officers noticed an almost collapsed and neglected house on Kronberg Road,” said Mashishi.

Mashishi told the Kempton Express the house, thought to be abandoned, was visited and, on closer inspection, a female pensioner solely relying on the government grant and a medically challenged daughter (22) were the occupants.

That triggered officers to draft an action plan, where various departments were roped in to assist in the commemoration of Mandela Month.

One of the members painted the house.

She said the pensioner’s house was cleaned and painted. They cut down trees and cleaned the yard.

The city also gave the family food parcels.

The stakeholders and painters get ready to work.

“The EMPD applauds the Community Safety Forum Officers for a job well done and urges the community and other stakeholders to lend a helping hand to the needy,” said Mashishi.
