Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni reflects on 100 days in office

He also takes advantage of the opportunity to interact with the community to listen to and respond to their concerns.

Executive Mayor councillor Sivuyile Ngodwana reached the milestone of 100 days in office earlier this month.

He celebrated this achievement during the council meeting by highlighting the accomplishments completed in line with his State of the City Address commitments in April.

Ngodwana stated while running the people’s government has not been simple, all parties in the coalition have been working hard to improve the lives of citizens.

“The disposal of waste has long been a problem for the City of Ekurhuleni, but over the past 100 days, we achieved significant progress in stabilising the service.

Among the accomplishments, according to the mayor, was the delivery of four waste compactors, which are in operation and eight more by the end of this month.

They made large-scale efforts to improve, clean, and make landfill sites more user-friendly.

“The city continues to urge people to keep those areas clean while clearing 100 unlawful dumping sites.

“Water security has also been the subject of extensive work. We completed one tower and five water reservoirs, all now being connected to the water network.

“Five stormwater drainage systems have been updated, and six significant road projects connecting residential neighbourhoods to important roads are almost completed.”

Ngodwana also stated the city continued to provide residents with comfort and progress.

He said they spent more than R3m to renovate the Somhlolo multi-purpose taxi rank in Vosloorus.

“This organisation, in its current condition, provides good space for small businesses and is secure for commuters.

“I am proud to represent a municipality with hardworking civil servants that always put residents first,” said Ngodwana.

Another major accomplishment is the introduction of the Mayoral Outreach Program, Masisebenzeni – People’s Government @Work, which represents the dedication to improving service delivery through joint efforts.

The mayor and his team of MMCs visit several villages every second Friday to review the level of service delivery, identify areas for intervention, and remove the identified bottlenecks.

The mayor has taken the Masisebenzeni program to Thembisa, Katlehong, Daveyton, Tsakane, and Kwa-Thema in his first 100 days in office and will continue to expand the program throughout the municipality.
