Two get 15 years for armed robbery in Kempton Park

The victim said a firearm was pointed at him, and his property was taken by force.

The Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court sentenced Kgonyane Jackie (40) and Xaba Benjamin Mxolisi (39) to 15 years each for armed robbery and declared both unfit to possess firearms under the Firearm Control Act.

The incident occurred on June 3 last year, when sergeants Vonani Maluleke and Gilbert Moila were sent to the corner of Van Riebeeck and Hibiscus streets in Kempton Park after reports of an armed robbery.

According to Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Dipuo Ditshego, the suspects had used a firearm to threaten the victim and forcibly take his belongings.

The suspects were found with the stolen property and arrested on the scene with help from SSS Security personnel, who were instrumental in the quick response.

Detective Sergeant Tshepo Langa took charge of the investigation, ensuring a smooth trial, which culminated in the sentencing on October 1.

“These sentences reflect the commitment of our officers in removing illegal firearms from our streets,” said Ditshego.

Acting station commander Colonel Lesetja Manewa commended the sector team and SSS Security staff for their swift action and applauded Langa for his dedication.

“This should send a strong message to would-be criminals: Kempton Park has no place for crime. Together as law enforcement agencies, we can win the fight against crime,” he said.
