Pensioner (71) arrested for allegedly stealing GROCERIES

Personnel at the Kempton Park store allegedly caught the suspect trying to steal R800 worth of groceries and asked police to open a case.

On August 3, officers from the Benoni Flying Squad were called in to arrest a 71-year-old suspect who was allegedly caught stealing groceries worth R800 from a store situated in Central Avenue, Kempton Park.

According to the unit’s spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the suspect was caught by personnel at the shop.

“Officers were requested to open a case, a process which was duly followed as per the request,” he said.

On the same day, officers supplied back up to a security company in North Rand Road, Beyers Park, Boksburg where the community noticed suspicious behaviour of persons climbing in and out of a manhole.

“On arrival of the security company, three suspects scattered from the scene.

“The collaboration of the community, Legendary Guardians and BFS members, led to two suspects aged 28 and 52 years being arrested with one suspect allegedly fleeing in a white Toyota Tazz,” said Giblin.

He added that further investigations led to the recovery of bags containing copper wires which the suspects had allegedly been cutting and removing from inside the manhole.

The value of the copper is estimated at around R60 000.00.

In further policing an abandoned white Ford Ranger was recovered in Daveyton reported taken during a house robbery on a Kwamhlanga case.

Investigation continues into all cases.

The suspects arrested will be appearing in the Kempton Park and Boksburg Magistrate’s Courts facing charges of shoplifting, damage to infrastructure and theft.
