46 arrested during police operation in Kempton Park

The operation’s focus areas were Pomona, Bredell, Geldenhuys informal settlement and Kempton Park CBD.

Forty-six undocumented persons were arrested during Operation Okae Molao held in Kempton Park on October 13.

All 46 people were detained at the Kempton Park Police Station, pending their verification process and appearances in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.

This was the district Operation Okae Molao with members from Ekurhuleni North District attending, including Norkem Park, Thembisa South, Sebenza and Olifantsfontein among others.

The operation, a multidisciplinary approach to curb crime, was led by Brigadier Lebohang Machakela, the deputy district commissioner.

Members from CPF, Community in Blue, immigration officers, EMPD, National Traffic, community patrollers and the VCIU unit were also present.

Stop-and-searches, roadblocks and raids of local shebeens formed part of the operation.

Captain Jethro Mtshali, the spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, said the areas of focus were Pomona, Bredell, Geldenhuys informal settlement and Kempton Park CBD.

“Two scrapyards were shut down and issued fines of R1 000 and R1 500 respectively for not complying with the second-hand goods act,” said Mtshali.

“Five shebeens were closed down and liquor confiscated in Pomona and Bredell. This is due to establishments not complying with the liquor act.

One vehicle was impounded at the roadblock after it was discovered that the license does not match the engine, which means the disc is fraudulent.

“Over 390 vehicles and 703 people were searched at the roadblock and stop-and-searches.

The male driver was the only person inside the vehicle and an enquiry has been opened to check and verify if he is involved in other syndicates of the same nature.

“The vehicle will also be investigated.”

Mtshali also told Express that 82 motorists were issued traffic fines for various issues such as expired license discs and driving without a driver’s license. The value of the traffic fines is R32 400.

“One suspect was arrested on charges of dealing drugs at Geldenhuys informal settlement. Members targeted that area after receiving information. They found the suspect in possession of dagga and cash,” explained Mtshali.
