A number of homeless people gathered at Langenhoven where they were given a meal.
Sergeant Dipuo Ditshego said that the aim of the event was to help the homeless famaliarise themselves with local police.
In doing so it is hoped the homeless can help the police by being the station’s eyes and ears for crime in the area.
Acting station commander Colonel Motsatsi Lesomo said such events help officers to remind young people living on the streets that they are valuable.
“As Kempton Park SAPS, we are celebrating the Youth Day with the youth sleeping on the streets. We gave them something to eat,’’ said Lesomo.
She added that officers also engaged with the vagrants and explained to them that just because they sleep on the streets that doesn’t mean they should commit crimes.

Lesomo told the Kempton Express that it was hoped that by building relationships with the homeless the fight against crime could be stepped up.
“Togethr we can make Kempton Park a crime free area,” she said.
Officers from Kempton Park SAPS also handed out clothes and shoes on the day.
“I am happy that I was given clothes and shoes because I had nothing to wear. I want to thank the police for everything they did for us,” said Thabo Makula.
