Vanessa Davis from SAWRC said they received a call from Brendan Murray at the Owl Rescue Centre.

“Brendan had received a call from Jonathan, who works at Atlas Truck Centre in Pomona.

“Being far closer to Pomona, we grabbed a carrier and shot through to meet Jonathan, who had picked up the beautiful spotted eagle-owl and placed her in a box.”

Davis said when they arrived, the owl was not doing well.

When she was found the owl was not doing well.

“She was transferred to our carrier lined with soft blankets, and she remained lying down with her eyes closed.”

For the first few days, the owl was fed, hydrated, cleaned and medicated before she was left to sleep.

“By day six, she was a bit stronger and began finding her feet without falling over.”

Davis added that the owl’s care continued, much the same as the first few days, and by day 15, caretakers placed her into the flight aviary at SAWRC.

For a few days, her flight was monitored, and then arrangements for her return to the property in Pomona were made.

“We arranged with Jonathan to release the gorgeous, gentle girl back into the same area.”

The owl wasted no time and quickly exited the carrier.

“She flew onto a wall, where she stayed for a few minutes, before flying into the trees,” Davis said.

During her recovery.

“Just across the wall from where we released her is an overgrown and unused service road. Right next to that is a massive veld and vlei area where ample food is available,” she added.

It was established that the owl is one of a breeding pair at the site.

AM Coffee sponsored the costs for food, cleaning materials and transportation of the owl.
