This is in celebration of Transport Month.Inquiries have identified Germiston as the second highest in Ekurhuleni for motor vehicle collisions.

Germiston has the second-highest number of fatal accidents in the City of Ekurhuleni. EMPD releases its accident report statistics thus far for the year 2021-2022.

Although initiated to showcase government transport infrastructure services, advancing the country’s road safety initiatives also forms part of Transport Month.

According to a report by EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, Kempton Park has a high rate of fatal collisions (48) followed by Germiston with 34.

The statistics seen with this reportage include all areas around Ekurhuleni based on reports by the EMPD in the year 2021-2022 thus far.

“These incidents were attended to and reported to by EMPD and not SAPS or other law enforcers,” said Thepa.

The GCN also inquired about high crash zone alerts and what it takes to have such signage put up on the roadside.

Thepa said reactive approaches typically include identifying the crash location, diagnosing the contributing factors and leading crash types for each crash location identified and selecting the appropriate countermeasures that match the problems identified.

“We then establish designing the treatment, justify the expenditure through economic analysis and implement the treatment,” said Thepa

“What then follows is monitoring, analysing and evaluating its effectiveness.”

Thepa said the primary data source for crash reduction initiatives, especially those undertaken by road engineers, is typically police crash reports.

She said this data should provide crucial information, which at a minimum should include the crash severity and the number of each injury severity type.

The statistics are as follows:

Germiston (1702 collisions):
• Fatal – 34
• Serious – 58
• Slight – 416
• Damage – 1194
Edenvale and surrounds (289 collisions):
• Fatal – 0
• Serious – 11
• Slight -60
• Damage 218
