Vehicle thieves caught in Ekurhuleni area

"Laptops, cellphones, vehicle documentation as well as vehicle registration documents were confiscated."

A joint operation between law enforcement agencies revealed information about vehicles being smuggled out of Sout Africa.

Through the operation held in Edenvale, agents from the Hawks Tactical Operations Management Section in collaboration with Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence, Tracker Connect, Badboyz Security, GTP Saturation Unit, ICB-Insurance Crime Bureau and Vision Tactical SIU obtained information about the smuggling operation.

The Ford Fiesta the suspects were spotted in.

Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo of the Hawks said the team proceeded to Edenvale where men in a Ford Fiesta were spotted while removing a Nissan X-trail from a tow truck.

“The suspects attempted to flee on foot, however, they were swiftly cornered.”

Nxumalo said further investigation led the team to a residential property where, a Toyota Etios Cross, was recovered.

Nxumalo said the X-trail was hijacked from Alexandra while the Fiesta was reportedly hijacked from Mamelodi East and the Etios stolen from Honeydew a few weeks ago.

The arrested suspects were charged with possession of the suspected stolen property and expected to make their first appearance in Edenvale Magistrate’s Court on September 29.

“The investigation to link them to hijacking and smuggling of vehicles cases is continuing,” said Nxumalo.
