Following a fight at school on September 7, a Grade 11 student from Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School in Kempton Park succumbed to his injuries on September 8, after being brought to Tembisa Hospital.

The reason behind the fight is unknown.

Two minors have been taken into custody. This is according to Captain James Mtshali, a spokesperson for the Kempton Park SAPS.

“We can confirm that the detectives working on this investigation were successful in apprehending two students, aged 16 and 17, who had appeared before the children’s court pending a decision. The matter is being handled with sensitivity as the accused are minors,” said Mtshali.

The campaign’s goal, according to communications officer for Thembisa South Police Station Constable Bridget Mavuso, is to increase awareness of the harm that bullying and drug use by students can do both inside and outside school.

“Students were taught about discipline, adhering to school rules and making it acceptable to report bullying to teachers.

“Students were also taught about juvenile prisons, how bullying can affect their futures, and what other resources are available to help them when they encounter difficulties,” said Mavuso.

Pamphlets on drugs and bullying were given to the learners and teachers.
