Musical talent nurtured in Thembisa

Founder of the group, popularly known as Big Star Johnson, said the group school was severely affected by the hard lockdown and took a while to start up again.

A music group founded by local rapper and musician Tumelo Rakumako is ready to welcome new students interested in learning musical instruments.

Initially started in 2016, Blue Notes had to shut down due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Founder of the group, popularly known as Big Star Johnson, said the group school was severely affected by the hard lockdown and took a while to start up again.

Kempton Park’s rapper and musician Big Star Johnson founded Blue Notes to nurture musical talent.

“Because of the pandemic we no longer had a venue for our classes,” said Rakumako.

He now has about 10 young artists learning musical instruments

“The most rewarding thing about learning an instrument when I was growing up was how my character was shaped and developed.

The is a huge amount of talent in Kempton Park and Thembisa,” said the winner of the 2015 hip-hop reality rap show, The Hustle.

“Our mission is to give people a platform to express themselves but also learn and carry our values with them for the rest of their lives.

“Our values are family, discipline, commitment and self-expression,” said Rakumako.

Together with his partners, Thabiso Modikoe and Leshego Mothibi, Big Star Johnson and the team teach children how to play the drums, guitar and piano.
