Captain Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, said one suspect sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body while the other in the leg.

“A vigilant team of Gauteng Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigation unit and other law enforcement agencies were monitoring the Kempton Park area on July 21 after receiving information about two vehicles alleged to be involved in hijackings and robberies,” said Mtshali.

While investigating, it was discovered that the Lexus was taken from the owner during a hijacking incident on Blockhouse Street, Kempton Park, in June 2022.

“While monitoring, the members spotted the two vehicles, a Lexus and VW Golf, in Glen Marais driving at high speed.

Police tried to stop the vehicles but suddenly shots were allegedly fired at the police who retaliated, which resulted in the suspects being shot at.

Mtshali added that police managed to stop the Lexus at Doringboom Street and the Golf at Kweper Street.

“While searching the vehicles, two firearms and ammunitions were found and it was later discovered that the Lexus was taken from the owner during a hijacking incident on Blockhouse Street in June,” said Mtshali.

“Investigations continue and we hope more suspects will be found.
