“Our nurses from Roodepoort come through and can help with many tests during the monthly screening clinics.

“Screenings are conducted by Cansa registered nurses at a minimal cost to those who need it most,” said Lucinda Cater, the Canca care centre coordinator in Bedfordview.

She added the minimal costs involved in the screenings also include laboratory fees.

“Results are in within a few days and we communicate to visitors either telephonically or electronically,” she said.

Lucinda added that referrals are done when there is something nurses are concerned about.

Cansa also offers many other services including physical visits by nurses and support groups for those going through a cancer diagnosis, treatment or recovery.

As an NGO, Cansa relies on fundraising.

“We need donations in various forms. At the moment we are looking for hospital beds that we could rent out to patients.
