Commemorative donation to Thembisa school for class of ’76

“This donation might seem like a little to others, but it is a lot in our hearts.”

Learners of Winnie Mandela Secondary School received a donation of school shoes and sanitary pads on June 15.

Together with Pro Plan Consulting Engineers, the MMC of Human Settlements Dino Peterson handed over 90 pairs of school shoes as well as sanitary pads to learners.

Peterson said the donation was part of the city’s Youth Month programme to commemorate the role the youth of 1976 played in enabling the democracy that the current generation enjoys.

“Part of our programme was to create awareness around the plight of our young people and some of the challenges they are experiencing as a result of the Covid pandemic,” said Peterson.

School principal Eddie Kekana was delighted to have formed a relationship with the sponsors.

He said many learners come from child-headed families and depend on the school for food and nutrition.

“To us, it means a lot.

“These donations are going to make some changes to the circumstances of those learners. Our learners come from very challenging environments.

“We thank the department of human settlements and the MMC as well as Pro Plan,” said Kekana.

The principal encouraged the learners to continue working hard at their studies.

“Do not allow the circumstances in which you are living to dictate the course of life.

“Confront every socio-economic challenge, have a quest for success in life to overcome the obstacles,” said Kekana.
