Siyabonga Bam, a volunteer at the library, encouraged children to start reading and gain the benefits of it at a young age.

“The initiative encourages mothers and caregivers to bring their babies to the Bonaero Park Children’s Library from the age of two,” he explained.

Bam said the children will be eligible to have their own library card, which in turn will be linked to the mother or parental guardian’s library card.

“The campaign also seeks to promote mother-to-child reading from as early as two years old,” said Bam.

According to Bam, this is inspired by the idea that early introduction to literature and literary materials will build a foundation that the children will use from Grade R to tertiary level.

He added that the campaign also seeks to promote the library as a source of information for the community.

He emphasised that by providing resources such as a library and allowing the community to use them, they will be serving and assisting the early career development programme.

“We also encourage the use of the library on weekends to discuss issues of common interest.

“I will be implementing child minding activities on the weekend too and literacy development activities and independent reading exercise,” Bam said.

To join the library, individuals would need a copy of proof of address and a copy of their ID.
