Vendor earns a living from the streets of Kempton CBD

Walking through the streets of Kempton Park CBD, one usually gets a feeling of redundancy by the sight of stock being sold by street vendors.

However, that is not what Tomy Mbilas sweets and nut stall gives when you walk past.

The 34-year-old Tomy Mbila serves a customer.

The 34-year-old, originally from Mogobodi, Mpumalanga, has been working since the age of 17 years old.

The Esselen Park resident said before he started selling sweets, nuts and dried fruits in 2018, he also used to sell the common types of merchandise street hawkers sell, however, the competition began to get tough.

Tomy Mbila started his sweets and nuts business in 2018 after competition began to get tough with other emerging street vendors in Kempton Park CBD.

“I was also known for selling things like girl’s make-up but the competition started getting tough when more vendors emerged here in Kempton Park. That’s when I decided I needed to change,” said Mbila.

He now earns a living by offering a variety of sweet and nut treats.
